ESTA-O acknowledges that Lakehead University's Orillia Campus is situated on Treaty 20 land, and is the Traditional Territory of the Anishnaabeg people. The Anishnaabeg include the Ojibwe, Odawa, and Pottawatomi nations - collectively known as the Three Fires Confederacy. We express gratitude and respect for the land on which we learn, and for the Chippewas of Rama Mnjikaning First Nation with whom we share the land.
As future educators, we are committed to doing our part in implementing the TRC's Calls to Action. We will honour Indigenous history and culture in our classrooms through ongoing partnerships with First Nation, Métis, and Inuit people. These partnerships will be built on a foundation of mutual trust, respect, and reciprocity.
The members of ESTA-O acknowledge the impacts of generational trauma on our Indigenous learners and colleagues and recognize the role played by the Canadian residential school system in this process. We pledge to provide safe spaces for our students and to actively participate in the eradication of systemic racism and colonial practices in education. In this and many other ways are we committed to moving forward in the spirit of truth and reconciliation.
